VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement

Nowra Private Hospital offers patients the latest technology in orthopaedic knee replacement surgery with the VELYS robot.

Robotic surgery offers a minimally invasive approach to surgery, allowing specialists to perform complex surgical procedures with increased accuracy and control than is possible through standard operative techniques.

The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution helps surgeons perform knee replacement surgery that is tailored to each patient, and is designed to provide digital precision and accuracy to get you back to the things you love.

Why travel for your knee replacement when you can get the latest surgical care close to home?

A knee replacement is a procedure whereby your surgeon removes areas of bone that have been damaged by osteoarthritis and replaces these parts with different types of implants1.

Robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery is similar to traditional knee replacement surgery but uses technology such as a robotic-assisted device. Robot-assisted surgery utilizes technology to aid the surgeon as they plan for and execute a precise knee replacement personalised for your specific anatomy2. This robotic-assisted device does not move or operate on its own.

Robotic-assisted knee replacement:

  • Technology controlled by the surgeon2
  • May experience less pain and a faster recovery 3,5
  • More consistent outcomes2 (inconsistencies can affect recovery)

Traditional knee replacement:

  • Hand-held tools
  • May experience a longer recovery time 3-5
  • There may be more variability in the surgical processes and outcomes3

There are a number of potential benefits to using this technology for your knee replacement.* During your procedure, the technology will gather details and data related to your knee to assist the surgeon in determining an optimal implant fit.

Robotic-assisted technology may deliver*:

  • A greater range of motion (how well you can bend and flex your knee after surgery)3
  • Less pain compared to traditional methods3
  • Faster recovery times (reduced length of hospital stay, hospital readmissions, and health visits)3-5

Every knee is different, as is every patient requiring a knee replacement procedure. The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution helps surgeons perform knee replacement surgery that is tailored to each patient, and is designed to provide digital precision and accuracy to get you back to the things you love.

The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution is a first-of-its-kind operating table mounted solution that adapts to the surgeon’s workflow. It is designed to help surgeons accurately resect bones that align and position the implant relative to the soft-tissue during total knee replacement.

Some robotic-assisted technologies may require you to go for a series of X-rays or a Computerised Tomography (CT) scan so that the technology can create a three-dimensional (3D) model of your knee anatomy. For surgeries using the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution, pre-operative imaging is not surgeons to register your knee in real-time.

The VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution uses a variety of technologies designed to ensure the surgeon has the information and tools they need to perform a highly accurate and precise knee replacement2.

This solution is designed to:

  • Provide your surgeon with real-time information about your knee during operation
  • Help your surgeon remove the damaged bone (your surgeon remains in control and the device does not move or operate on its own).
  • Use an infrared camera and optical trackers to help your surgeon gather the necessary data about your anatomy to position the implant.

Knee replacement surgery is used to treat knee osteoarthritis when other non-operative treatment options have been attempted and are no longer effective. If your GP has identified that you have severe osteoarthritis for which non-operative treatments are ineffective, they will make the decision to refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon to explore whether surgery could be an appropriate treatment option. Your orthopaedic surgeon will then determine the best surgical approach for you based on your individual circumstance, including if you are a suitable candidate for knee replacement surgery using the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution.
